ROMANTIC LANDSCAPES
Saturday, June 17, 7:30 p.m. First Baptist Church, Portland Joan Kwuon, violin Chi Yong Yun, piano (Korea) Festival Orchestra Claudio Cohen, conductor (Brazil) Martinů: Toccata from Toccata e due canzoni, Op. H.311 (1946) Bruch: Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 26 Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 11 |
Composed when he was merely 15 years of age, Mendelssohn's first symphony transcends his youth and exhibits a young Romantic genius at work. From the majestic to the brooding, the playful to the idyllic, the work is unequivocally an elegant example of early Romanticism.
Martinů’s Toccata e due canzoni was written by the composer after he relearned how to walk. Visceral and forceful, the Toccata is at once feverish and victorious. Bruch’s fantasy-like Violin Concerto No. 1 offers us a dip in a Romantic river! |
