About the music
Enjoy a star studded evening with Portland’s best and brightest young musicians, collected together in our Orpheus Academy! The Orpheus Academy Orchestra first tackles Stravinsky’s Concerto in D for Strings. One of his last tonal works, Stravinsky’s Concerto in D for Strings is paradoxically one of Stravinsky’s brightest and most accessible works and one of his least well-known, a short, lyrical and jazzy treat for the Stravinsky aficionado.
Nancy Ambrose King, one of the foremost oboists of our day, joins the academy orchestra to perform Mozart's Oboe Concerto, written when the composer was just 21 for his colleague at the court of Salzburg, it's become one of the most important oboe concertos of all time.
Orpheus Academy orchestra wraps up with Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, a ballet composed by Stravinsky at his producer’s request re-working older music written by at least six different composers based on the vicious commedia dell-arte character, Punch. The orchestra will be joined by The Zorá Quartet, winners of the most prestigious chamber music competition in the US, the Fischoff Competition!
