"When I think about contemporary life, it's impossible not to realise that we are balanced on the edge of time's end. It's frighteningly close" - states Peteris Vasks, contemporary Latvian composer whose Musica Appassionata opens the programs and aptly encapsulates his perspective os the battle of good and evil. Both mystical and romantic, Vasks' sentiment describes what Shostakovich and Gubaidulina also felt, that life is a drama and every honest composer searches for a way out of the crises of his time.
