GREAT EXPECTATIONS
MEEHAE RYO & THE ORPHEUS ACADEMY ORCHESTRA

Ravel: Pavane for a dead princess
Beethoven: Symphony No. 2  in D, Op. 36

Schumann: Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 120

Orpheus Academy performed Ravel's Pavane, a warmly nostalgic, miniature antique meant to whisk us away to the 16th century court of a Spanish princess, followed by Schumann's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 120. a piece that defined cello concertos for the century after it was written with Deustche Grammaphon recording cellist Meehae Ryo. We ended with Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 36, written when the composer had just learned that his deafness was permanent. Beethoven wrote, "I would have ended by life. Only my art held me back. It seemed to me impossible to leave the world until I had produced all that I felt was within me.”

CHI YONG YUN & BEAVERTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Mozart: La clemenza di Tito
Schumann: Piano Concerto

Haydn: Symphony No. 103, "Drumroll"

The night began with the overture to Mozart’s
La clemenza di Tito, an opera written  in honor of King Leopold II’s coronation as King of Bohemia, a hidden gem from Mozart’s final days. The crowning achievement of the night, however, was Schumann’s Piano Concerto, a tribute to his brilliant pianist wife and captivatingly performed by international soloist, recitalist and lecturer Chi Yong Yun. The night ended with Haydn's Symphony No. 103, created by the newly free-wheeling composer during one of the happiest times of his life.

ZORA STRING QUARTET PORTLAND DEBUT
Gold Medal Winner, Fischoff Competition

Stravinsky: Three Pieces for String Quartet
Schumann: String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 41, No. 1
Debussy: String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10

The 2015 Gold Medalists of the prestigious Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, and winners of the 2015 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the Sander Buchman Award, the Coleman-Barstow Prize winner at the Coleman National Chamber Music Competition in 2015, the Zorá String Quartet certainly live up to their name (which means "dawn" in Bulgarian).  They performed Stravinsky's engigmatic Three Pieces for String Quartet, Schumann's homage to Mendelsonn, his String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 41, No. 1 and Debussy's only string quartet, lush and imaginative.

OBOIST NANCY AMBROSE KING & ORPHEUS ACADEMY ORCHESTRA

Stravinsky: Concerto in D for Strings
Mozart: Oboe Concerto, K314
Stravinsky: Pulcinella Suite

This was a star studded evening with Nancy Ambrose King, one of the foremost oboists of our day performing one of the most important works for oboe of all time, Mozart's only Oboe Concerto, and the Zora Quartet performing Stravinsky's zesty Pullcinella Suite. The evening was rounded off with Stravinsky's incredibly difficult, avante guard Concerto in D for Strings.
